Giving to charity widespread in BRIC countries
The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), a charity that works to help other charities, has today published the first ever research on individuals giving to charity in the BRIC economies (Brazil, Russia, India and China). The research which was carried out by global research agency Synovate reveals a strong culture of charitable giving in all four emerging markets.
Four telephone surveys each of over 1,000 people living in urban areas in the BRIC countries show that the proportion of people who gave money in the past year to a charity is above 40 per cent in all four countries. In India 41.2 per cent gave; Russia 45 per cent; Brazil 61.5 per cent; and in China 80.1 per cent - although the huge response to the Sichuan earthquake disaster which occurred in May this year will almost certainly have boosted this figure. These numbers compare with 74 per cent of people in the UK who gave to charity in the last year. Bea Devlin, Head of International Development at CAF said: “The immense giving potential of the BRIC nations is in part because of an exponential population and economic boom which is bringing with it the spread of mass affluence.
